Chris' and my families first became acquainted when our fathers worked at the Edmonton branch of the Midland bank, above which his family lived. We would meet as teenagers in The George. Who could forget that immense laugh emanating from the back bar where Chris gathered with his friends. One vivid memory was from my 25th birthday/flat warming party on a sunny afternoon in May 1981. The party went on well into the early hours. In the morning, there was a knock on the door; our landlord had decided to pay a surprise visit! We tried to awaken a few guests who were asleep in the lounge, whilst surreptitiously trying to remove and stand in front of the Labour stickers which Chris had stuck everywhere the previous evening! He found it highly amusing later! In later years, we fell into the habit of meeting regularly for lunch. He would research restaurants and areas to explore. We ate at the Barbican, the Royal Festival Hall, as well as local places like Malone's and La Paella. We enjoyed fine food and wine, every meal enlivened by his humour, wit and wide ranging knowledge of politics, travel and music. He even suggested traveling to Lille for lunch, which to my regret, we never achieved. He was a dear and loyal friend, for whom nothing was too much for those he cared for. Chris and I first met in the early 1980's as members of the POEU and our paths crossed many times over the years. In later years he helped my mother in law get the assistance at home that she badly needed. I last saw Chris at the Union Chapel where we had gone to hear Laura Cantrell and I will always remember his wonderful smile, and his fantastic laugh, he will be sorely missed and my thoughts are with his family. As a young trade unionist in the early 90s I used to love being in meetings chaired by Chris who didn’t mince his words, was 100 percent fair and whose credibility and stature I admired then and now. I miss those days and my train journeys from Bournemouth to Judd Street to learn from him. Lee.

Oh Chris. We spent many a time putting the borough (and world) right over coffee and biscuits at the Trust. Your steam in and get things done attitude for the residents was always appreciated. The football chat was most enjoyable too. Some of your 'one liners' had us in stitches when you first said them and still make us chuckle now. You could be a grump sometimes but it didn't take much to turn that frown upside down (usually one chocolate biscuit would do it). Very fond memories of you, your good work and your humour. Susan x

Although he had previously been a Councillor elsewhere in Enfield prior to this time, Chris became Southbury Ward Councillor in 2006. At that election, the other two Southbury Ward Councillors were Conservatives, and I think a major reason why the Labour Party have held all three Southbury ward seats since 2010 is due to the work and influence of Chris. I soon came to work with Chris through my Residents Association on Ayley Croft estate in Southbury Ward. Our Association would hold occasional walkarounds with Councillors, and within a few hours of the end of our walkarounds I would have been copied in to a flurry of emails that Chris has sent to various Enfield Council departments. Not known for his diplomacy when it came to residents receiving a slow or sub-standard service by the Council, Chris would shake things up and get things done. Whenever Chris was copied into an Association email regarding a repair or a complaint, he 'rattled cages’ to get things resolved. Chris and I went through a frosty few months either side of the 2014 Council elections as I stood as an opposing Southbury Ward candidate, for the Trade Unionist & Socialist Coalition, Chris even requested that I removed him as a contact in my address book at that time. This uneasy time soon passed, and we resumed working productively together again for Ayley Croft estate after this. Chris would point our Residents Association towards anything that could help our Association or individual residents, e.g. grants from the London Mayor and from The Old Enfield Charitable Trust. He was complimentary of resident activists, and his anti-racism showed when he commented approvingly when we elected a Muslim woman (Nosheen, who played a leading and important role in our Association for years) as Chair of Ayley Croft Community Association. Ayley Croft estate had violent deaths of two women in separate incidents in August and September 2015. This caused unease in our community and Chris suggested to me that we hold a ‘Reassurance Meeting’ for the estate. I needed convincing by Chris that this event was worth holding, but he convinced me and we went ahead and arranged it. This Reassurance Meeting has been the biggest resident meeting in the 22 years to date that I have been living on Ayley Croft estate. Chris was a giant of a man, both in his stature, his work rate and his personality. I’ll miss him. John Dolan

Andy and I first got to know Chris during the 1992 General Election, he was Andy's trade union minder. My first impression was that he was 'big' in many ways, and that Andy would be safe with him. He also had a tremendous knowledge of Edmonton which was invaluable to a new parliamentary candidate. The most significant thing I remember about him was that he had the 'dirtiest' laugh in the Labour movement, something I was to tease him about over the decades of our friendship. From the time when Andy was elected in 1997 Chris became part of our lives. Whenever something important was going on in Enfield Chris was there. Imagine our surprise when we stumbled across Chris having dinner with Lyn Romain at our joint favourite restaurant, La Paella in Southgate. We were soon to find out that this was not a political 'meeting' but the most important relationship in both their lives. As my friendship with Lyn developed (two Jewish women who married out) I learnt more about the softer side of Chris's character. What was mainly a political friendship changed into something more personal. When Lyn knew she was dying her main concern was to ensure that Chris was looked after as much as he could be. She was thrilled when he was elected overwhelmingly to lead on the environment for Enfield Council. I promised Lyn that I would look out for Chris, hence our many lunches at London Road Fish and Chip restaurant and Prezzo. With every lunch that Chris and I shared my instructions from Andy was to get the gossip. My memory of these lunches is a lot of laughter and sharing at a personal level. Chris had many political attributes: as with most politicians some that were admirable and some that were not so much. Most of all Chris was dedicated to the people of Enfield. He was an extremely good local councillor, something that is of the utmost importance. Walking around Southbury ward with him was an education in how to do things properly: he was known by everyone and listened to all of their problems. Most importantly he came up with solutions that made people feel valued. To Chris's family we send condolences and hopefully at some point beyond Covid we can get together and share our memories. We have been good friends with Chris since our twenties. We knew Chris as someone who cared greatly for his local community and worked hard to make the world a better place now and for future generations. He made his mark as an active trade unionist and local Labour Councillor and continued throughout his adult life to enthusiastically support the causes already dear to him but to also learn about and understand new issues, particularly on the environment and to campaign on those too. He never lost his willingness to care about needs of the individual local people he represented and tirelessly followed up on the case work issues, as much as the strategic ones. He lived his life with a strong commitment to public service and a society which looks after the vulnerable and even if at times we would have a few lively debates together, we always knew that we shared these common values. The aspect of Chris that we will miss most but at the same time we will have great memories, is that of great friendship, in which you know the person is always there for you when you need them, especially at challenging times, and Chris certainly was, as we hope we were for him. Like other friends of Chris, we will particularly remember evenings listening to live music, at Union Chapel and other venues. A glass or two, some great or occasionally no so great music, a good natter on politics or Chris’s insights on the musical history of the performers-all were part of good evenings. There is much more to say and remember as we reflect on losing him. Certainly he will leave a large Chris sized gap in our lives. We remember him as a comrade and a much loved friend. Chris was a fantastic councillor for Southbury Ward, but he also helped me as Enfield North’s Disability Co-Ordinator, especially during the elections. His warmth, friendliness and great advice will be sorely missed. Rest in Peace, dear friend. And thank you for everything. Symes

I first met Chris when I became active in Enfield Labour Party in 2004. Unbeknown to me, his partner Lynn, had been my inspirational French teacher at Enfield County School. They showed me great kindness at a difficult time. Chris was always asking what he could do to help others, an immense sense of public duty and a brilliant source of local knowledge. He was our go to person, especially new councillors, who needed advice and guidance. His advice was always sprinkled with a story, told in the unique Bondy style, which invariably always ended with his infectious laughter. I sometimes wondered whether he was pulling my leg. He loved being a councillor and had aspirations for the Borough right until the end. He really was Mr Enfield. Goodbye Chris. R.I.P

I joined Southbury ward police in the summer of 2017. I was soon joined by PCSO Jenna Liddle and then PC Chris Pearson. I first met Chris Bond at our first CAPE meeting at the Civic Centre which was a nervous moment for me as I had no idea what to expect. What I do remember though is Chris with his towering frame being extremely understanding and so very knowledgeable about his ward. Over the next 2/3 years we struck up a fantastic working relationship and helped each other to achieve the ultimate goal, doing our best for the residents and visitors to Southbury ward. Chris knew the ward like the back of his hand and I was always so greatful for his support when I needed his assistance. I hope Chris felt the same about me and the Southbury ward police team. Unfortunately , due to having my own health issues, I have had to stay home and shield since March. Chris and I continued to messaged each other during this time. I was very aware of Chris’s health issues but not once did he complain and never did he mention just how bad he was feeling . Typical Chris. Unfortunately because of my own situation I cannot attend the Civic Centre on the 7th August to say my final goodbyes to Chris. He was a wonderful man and a wonderful Councillor who gave it his all.
